To sell to the Ghanaian diaspora, sell things that connect people to home: gifts for family in Ghana, food and beauty products from Ghana, culture, courses and services. Let them pay by card from abroad, deliver to a relative in Ghana, and earn trust with clear photos, reviews and updates. The diaspora buys because of belonging and care, not just price.
This guide gives ideas, not guarantees. We have no statistics on diaspora spending to quote, so test small first.
What does the diaspora buy from Ghana?
Think about what a Ghanaian in London, Houston or Toronto cannot easily get, or wants to give.
- Gifts delivered to family in Ghana: hampers, cakes, flowers, groceries, phones, school items.
- Ghanaian products shipped abroad: shea butter, skincare, spices, hair products, fabric and clothing. Shipping abroad is something you arrange yourself.
- Digital products: ebooks on Ghanaian recipes, language lessons (Twi, Ga, Ewe), music, and templates. Nothing to ship, so these are the easiest. See digital products to sell in Ghana.
- Courses and coaching: business, career and faith, taught by someone who understands both worlds. See how to sell coaching online in Ghana.
- Services: photography, event planning, errands, property and project supervision in Ghana.
- Event tickets: concerts, weddings and festival events at home or in the diaspora. See how to sell event tickets online in Ghana.
How do you let them pay from abroad?
They need a checkout that takes cards. On Paylead buyers can pay with Visa or Mastercard, and storefront prices can display in the buyer's currency based on their location. You are paid in cedis to MoMo or a Ghanaian bank account. We have not tested every foreign card, so do a small test order first. What we confirmed and what we did not is in how to accept payments from abroad in Ghana.
How do you price for the diaspora?
- Price in their currency. A buyer in London thinks in pounds. You can set a fixed price for a country on a product rather than relying on automatic conversion, which looks neater: £25 rather than £24.37.
- Know the value, not just the cost. A GH₵ 300 gift hamper delivered to a mother in Kumasi is worth more to the buyer than its ingredient cost, because it saves them the trip and shows care.
- Add the fee. Online payments cost 4% + GH₵ 1. You can let the buyer cover it with Customer pays transaction charges.
- Offer tiers. A small, medium and large option makes it easy to say yes. Read about order bumps and upsells.
How do you deliver to family in Ghana?
For physical gifts, the buyer is abroad but the receiver is in Accra, Kumasi or Takoradi.
- Ask for the receiver's name, phone number and address, with a landmark. Make clear in your product description that the buyer should enter the recipient's details in the delivery fields, and put a note on the order if you need to say who it is from.
- Send a message to the buyer with the order and delivery update, and a photo when it arrives. A photo of a smiling mother holding the gift sells the next order.
- Use a waybill and tracking. On Paylead you print a waybill, mark the order shipped, and the buyer gets a tracking page. See how to manage deliveries with waybills and tracking.
- Agree a delivery window with the receiver by phone before the rider leaves.
Pay on delivery is not for the buyer who paid already, but a receiver in Ghana can sometimes pay for an item on arrival. Use it only if it fits your arrangement with the buyer, and read cash on delivery in Ghana first.
How do you build trust with buyers who live far away?
Trust is the whole game. A buyer in the UK cannot walk into your shop.
- Show real photos and videos of the actual product, in daylight.
- Show reviews and past deliveries, with permission. See how to get customer reviews for your online store.
- Use a branded checkout and send receipts by email.
- Be reachable on WhatsApp, and answer within a few hours across time zones.
- State your refund and replacement rules clearly.
- Tell your story. Where you are, who you are, why you started.
- Do a small order first. Offer a low-price first purchase to earn a repeat buyer.
How do you reach them?
- Instagram and TikTok content aimed at Ghanaians abroad: gift ideas before Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, Homowo and weddings.
- WhatsApp: share the link in family and church groups. See how to sell digital products on WhatsApp.
- Your own store link in your bio. Share your store link.
- Email: collect addresses and write before key dates. See how to build an email list in Ghana.
What does it cost to sell on Paylead?
Starter is free. Online payments cost 4% + GH₵ 1 on every plan. On a GH₵ 400 gift sold, the fee is GH₵ 17, so you receive GH₵ 383. Withdrawals cost GH₵ 5, and arrive the next working day.
