How to run a Christmas sale online in Ghana

To run a successful Christmas sale online in Ghana, start planning in November: stock up on what sold last year, create gift bundles at three price levels, set clear delivery cut-off dates, announce your offers early to your WhatsApp contacts and email list, and run ads in the first two weeks of December. December is the biggest selling month for many Ghanaian businesses, and the sellers who prepare early capture most of it.

December in Ghana is busy: Christmas, end-of-year parties, weddings, church conventions, the diaspora visiting for "Detty December", and people spending their bonuses. Here's how to make the most of it.

1. Plan in November

  • Look at last year's sales: what sold, what didn't, when demand peaked.
  • Order stock early. Suppliers, shipping and delivery all slow down in December.
  • Book riders early and agree December rates.
  • Plan your offers and create your discount codes in advance.

2. Create gift bundles

Most December shoppers are buying for someone else. Make it easy:

  • Three price levels: a small gift, a medium gift and a premium hamper.
  • Ready-made sets: skincare set, perfume trio, kids' bundle, food hamper, office gift box.
  • Gift wrapping as an add-on.
  • Gift notes: offer to include a handwritten message; ask for it on WhatsApp after the order.
  • Send to someone else: say clearly that buyers can have the gift delivered to another person's address, and confirm the recipient's number before dispatch.

On Paylead, sell each set as a bundle, and offer gift wrapping as an order bump at checkout. See how to create product bundles that sell.

3. Corporate gifts

Companies buy gifts for staff and clients in December. Send a short gift catalogue to HR and admin teams in early November, with bulk prices and branding options. Send an invoice for bulk orders so the company can pay properly.

4. Set delivery cut-offs

Say clearly:

"Order by 20 December for delivery before Christmas in Accra. Other regions: order by 17 December."

Put it on your store, every product, your bio and your status. It's honest urgency that sells. See how to use urgency honestly.

5. Plan your offers

Pick one or two clear offers rather than ten:

  • Free delivery above a set amount
  • A gift with purchase (a free sample or mini product)
  • Bundle savings
  • A countdown sale for one weekend
  • Twelve days of deals: a different product each day

Create discount codes with end dates so the offers end on time. See how to create discount codes.

6. Reach the diaspora

Ghanaians abroad send gifts home and visit in December.

  • "Send a gift to Ghana" bundles for family.
  • Pre-orders for visitors to collect when they land.
  • Card payment for buyers abroad (some foreign banks block payments to Ghana, so offer MoMo through a relative as a backup).

See how to sell to the Ghanaian diaspora.

7. Promote it

  • Early announcement to past buyers by email and SMS. See how to send bulk SMS to your customers.
  • Daily WhatsApp Status with gift ideas and cut-off reminders. See WhatsApp Status marketing.
  • Short videos: unboxing gift sets, wrapping, "gift ideas under GH₵ 200".
  • Ads in the first two weeks of December, when people are planning. Costs often rise closer to Christmas.

8. Handle the rush

  • Pre-pack popular bundles before the rush.
  • Update stock so you never sell what you don't have.
  • Send order updates so buyers don't call to ask.
  • Recover abandoned carts. Paylead texts cart reminders after an hour and again after a day. See how to recover abandoned carts.
  • Get help: add a team member to manage orders without sharing your password. See how to let staff manage orders.

9. Follow up in January

January is quiet, so use your December buyers:

  • Thank them and ask for reviews.
  • Send a New Year offer.
  • Invite them to save your number for new arrivals.
