An order bump is a small add-on offered at checkout, before the customer pays, usually as a tick box. An upsell is a bigger offer shown right after payment, as a one-click next step. The bump raises the size of the current order. The upsell adds a second purchase on top of it. Use a bump for cheap extras that go with the main item, and an upsell for the natural next step up.
Order bump vs upsell at a glance
| Order bump | Upsell | |
|---|---|---|
| When it appears | At checkout, before payment | Right after payment |
| Format | Tick box on the checkout page | One-click offer page |
| Typical price | 10% to 30% of the main price | Often 1 to 3 times the main price |
| Buyer effort | One tick | One tap to approve, details pre-filled |
| Purpose | Complete the order | Move to the next step |
| Example | GH₵ 30 spreadsheet with a GH₵ 120 ebook | GH₵ 350 video course after the ebook |
What is an order bump?
A small extra that sits on the checkout page. "Yes, add the care kit for GH₵ 90." It joins the same order and the same payment. Read the full definition in what is an order bump.
What is an upsell?
An offer shown straight after the buyer pays. "Your order is confirmed. Want the full course for GH₵ 250 more?" On Paylead the buyer's details are already filled in, so they only approve the new payment. For pay-on-delivery orders, an accepted upsell joins the same delivery and appears on the same receipt.
What about downsells?
A downsell is a cheaper offer shown when someone says no to an upsell. Paylead does not have downsells. The offer builder has three offer types: order bump, upsell and cross-sell. A cross-sell is a "goes well with" suggestion shown on product pages, the cart and the receipt. If you want a lower-priced fallback, the way to do it today is to offer a cheaper product as its own upsell or cross-sell, or follow up with an email.
When should you use an order bump?
Use a bump when:
- The extra is small and obviously useful with the main item.
- The main price is low or medium and a second big decision would slow the sale.
- The extra is easy to deliver, such as a PDF, template or recording.
- You want more revenue from every buyer with no extra steps.
Examples: a recipe costing sheet with a baking ebook, a wig care kit with a wig, a webinar recording with a ticket. See 18 order bump examples.
When should you use an upsell?
Use an upsell when:
- There is a clear next step after the first purchase.
- The next step costs noticeably more than the first item.
- The first purchase builds trust, so the buyer is ready for more.
- You can give a reason to act now, such as a price only available on this page.
Examples: an ebook buyer offered the full course, a logo buyer offered a brand kit, a single coaching call buyer offered a package of four. This is how you move people up your value ladder.
Can you use both together?
Yes. One bump at checkout and one upsell after payment is a good setup. Each does a different job. Keep it to one of each, because too many offers confuse buyers.
Here is a worked example for a GH₵ 120 baking ebook:
| Step | Offer | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Main product | Baking ebook | GH₵ 120 |
| Order bump | Recipe costing spreadsheet | GH₵ 30 |
| Upsell after payment | Full video baking course | GH₵ 350 |
A buyer who takes everything pays GH₵ 500. A buyer who takes only the ebook still pays GH₵ 120, so there is no downside for them.
Quick decision guide
| Your situation | Use |
|---|---|
| Cheap extra that completes the order | Order bump |
| A bigger product that builds on the first | Upsell |
| Related items shown to browsers | Cross-sell |
| Service or booking that needs a date | Not available as a one-click offer |
On Paylead, services and bookings can't be one-click offers because they need a date or a brief. Offers must be live products or a simple add-on, such as gift wrapping, with a link, text or file delivered after payment.
Set both up on Paylead
Go to Upsells in your dashboard, click New offer and choose the type. Pick the product, set a full price, percentage off or amount off, and choose which products trigger the offer. Each offer shows people who saw it, people who took it and revenue. Steps are in the offer builder guide. Affiliates also earn commission on bumps and upsells taken in orders they referred.

FAQ
Is an order bump or an upsell better?
Neither is better. A bump is easier to sell because it is cheap and at checkout. An upsell can bring more money per taker. Many sellers use one of each.
Can I show an upsell before payment?
Not on Paylead. Upsells appear after payment. Before payment, use an order bump.
Does Paylead have downsells?
No. You can offer a cheaper product as another upsell or cross-sell, but there is no automatic downsell step.
How many offers should I show?
One order bump and one upsell at a time.
