What is a price ladder? Meaning, examples and how it differs from a value ladder

A price ladder is a range of versions of the same kind of product at different price points, usually a basic, a standard and a premium option. Each step up adds more features, quality or service for a higher price. It lets one shop serve a student with GH₵ 50 and a business owner with GH₵ 500, and it nudges many buyers toward the middle option. A price ladder is about pricing tiers. A value ladder is about a journey of different offers.

What is a price ladder in simple terms?

Imagine you sell logo design. Instead of one price, you sell three:

Package What is included Price
Basic 1 logo concept, 1 revision GH₵ 300
Standard 3 concepts, 3 revisions, social media sizes GH₵ 700
Premium 5 concepts, unlimited revisions, brand guide, templates GH₵ 1,500

That is a price ladder: the same service, three prices, more included at each step. The customer chooses the rung that fits their budget and need.

Price ladder vs value ladder

These two terms get mixed up.

Price ladder Value ladder
What it is Several tiers of the same product A sequence of different offers
Goal Match more budgets, lift the average price Move a customer from free to premium over time
Example Basic, standard and premium logo packages Free checklist, GH₵ 80 ebook, GH₵ 600 course, GH₵ 1,500 coaching
Customer chooses One tier, now The next step, later

A value ladder is about what you sell next. A price ladder is about how much you charge for different levels of the same thing. You can use both. Read what is a value ladder for the second one.

Why does a price ladder work?

  • More people can buy. A buyer who cannot afford GH₵ 700 may take the GH₵ 300 option, instead of leaving.
  • It frames the middle. Seeing GH₵ 300 and GH₵ 1,500 makes GH₵ 700 look reasonable.
  • It lifts the average order. Some buyers who would have taken the cheapest option choose the next one up when the gap in value is clear.
  • It reduces haggling. In Ghanaian WhatsApp sales, "can you reduce it?" is common. Clear tiers give the buyer a lower option without you cutting your price.

How to build a price ladder

  1. Start with your standard product. This is the middle rung, the one you want most people to buy.
  2. Create a lighter version. Remove a feature, shrink the size or cut the support. Price it at roughly half to two-thirds of the standard.
  3. Create a premium version. Add real value: more of your time, faster delivery, extras. Price it at roughly double or more.
  4. Make the differences obvious. Use a simple comparison table, not long paragraphs.
  5. Name the tiers clearly. "Basic, Standard, Premium" or "Starter, Plus, Pro" both work.
  6. Watch what sells. If nobody picks the top tier, it may be too expensive or not clearly better. If everyone picks the bottom one, your gap is too small or your middle tier is unclear.

These ratios are rules of thumb, not fixed formulas. Test them with your own buyers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Too many tiers. Three is usually enough. Five confuses people.
  • Tiers that differ only in price. Each rung needs a visible reason to cost more.
  • A premium tier you cannot deliver. Do not promise unlimited anything you cannot support.
  • Forgetting the cost. Make sure the lowest tier still earns you a profit after fees.

Selling price ladders on Paylead

You can sell tiers as separate products, or use packages for services. The help centre guide on selling a service with packages shows how to set up different levels. For physical or digital items, you can create each tier as its own product. Online payments cost 4% + GH₵ 1 per sale, so check your numbers on your lowest tier. See plans and fees.

After someone buys a tier, you can offer the next one up as an upsell. For help setting prices, read how to price digital products in Ghana.
