How to pay school fees online in Ghana (MoMo, bank and payment links)

To pay school fees online in Ghana, ask your school which payment method it accepts, then pay by mobile money, card, bank transfer or the payment link or portal the school gives you. Always pay the account or link the school itself published, and keep the receipt or confirmation SMS until the school confirms your payment.

What are the ways to pay school fees online?

Method How it works Good to know
Mobile money (MoMo) Pay to the school's registered merchant number or through its payment page Check the name on the confirmation screen
Card Pay on the school's payment page with a Visa or Mastercard Only on the page the school gave you
Bank transfer or deposit Pay into the school's bank account Keep the slip or transfer confirmation
Payment link The school sends a link by WhatsApp or SMS and you pay on the page Good for exact amounts, since the amount is set
School portal Some schools run their own portal Use only the portal address the school tells you

We do not list specific school portals, because each school and university uses its own. Ask the accounts office.

Step by step: how to pay

  1. Get the exact amount and the payment details in writing: from the school's fee notice, accounts office or official WhatsApp group.
  2. Check the details are official. Call the school if a number or account looks different from last term.
  3. Pay. For MoMo, enter the amount and your child's reference (name and class or index number). For a link, open it and follow the page.
  4. Check the name shown before you confirm. It should be the school or its payment provider.
  5. Save the proof. Take a screenshot, keep the confirmation SMS and note the transaction ID.
  6. Send the proof to the accounts office if the school asks, and wait for their confirmation or a receipt.

What should I put as the payment reference?

Use your child's full name, class and student ID. If you pay for more than one child, pay each separately or note the split clearly. Without a reference, accounts offices struggle to match payments.

How do I keep receipts for school fees?

  • Keep the MoMo confirmation SMS and the transaction ID.
  • Screenshot card receipts and email confirmations.
  • Collect the school's official receipt after payment. A screenshot of your own payment is not the school's receipt.
  • Save everything in one folder, or a "School fees" album on your phone, for the whole year.

How do I avoid school fee scams?

  • Fake numbers. Scammers copy school branding and send a "new account" on WhatsApp. Confirm by calling the school using a number you already have.
  • Payment to a personal number you do not recognise. Ask why, and confirm with the headteacher or accounts office.
  • Pressure. "Pay in the next hour or lose your place" is a warning sign.
  • Sharing your PIN or OTP. No school needs these.
  • Fake screenshots of payments. If you are the school, check your wallet, not a picture.

Can I pay school fees in instalments?

Only if the school allows it. Ask for the schedule in writing. Some schools send a payment link for each instalment, so you pay a clear amount each time.

What if my payment does not show?

  1. Check your MoMo or bank balance to see if money left your account.
  2. Send the transaction ID to the accounts office.
  3. Wait for the school to confirm. Call if it takes longer than they said.
  4. Contact your provider if money left your account and the school never received it.

Does the school pay a fee when I pay online?

It depends on the tool the school uses. Schools using Paylead pay 4% + GH₵ 1 on online payments, and they can choose to pass the fee to the payer. That is the school's choice, so the page you see shows the total before you pay. If you are a school, read how to collect school fees online in Ghana.

Tips for parents

  • Pay early in the term, not on the deadline day, when networks are busy.
  • Keep the amount for fees apart from daily spending.
  • Pay from the phone linked to your own wallet, not an agent's, when you can.
  • Ask the school to put payment instructions on its official page.
