Most people in Ghana read ebooks on their phones, and the right app makes a big difference: no zooming in and out on a PDF, a night mode for late reading, and your place saved. Here are seven good options going into 2027, most of them free.
Apps and features change, so check each app's store page before you rely on a feature.

1. Google Play Books
Free on Android and iPhone. Besides books from the Play Store, you can upload your own PDFs and EPUBs, and it keeps your place across devices. A good default for most readers.
2. Kindle
Amazon's free app. Great reading experience, but books come from Amazon's store, which takes card payments, not MoMo. You can send your own documents to it with Send to Kindle.
3. Apple Books
Built into iPhones and iPads. Opens PDFs and EPUBs you download, including books you buy from Ghanaian authors.
4. Adobe Acrobat Reader
The standard free PDF reader. Best for workbooks, guides and anything with forms to fill in.
5. Moon+ Reader
A popular Android reader with lots of settings: fonts, themes, night mode and auto-scroll. Good for EPUB books.
6. Wattpad
A free community of stories by new writers, including many African writers. Readers find stories here; writers build an audience before selling a book.
7. Everand (formerly Scribd)
A subscription library of ebooks and audiobooks. Check its site for the price and payment options in Ghana.
How to read a book you bought from a Ghanaian author
Many Ghanaian authors sell their books directly as PDFs or EPUBs. After you pay (often by MoMo), you get a download link by email:
- Open the email on your phone and tap the download link.
- Open the file in Google Play Books, Apple Books or Acrobat Reader.
- In Google Play Books, use "Upload files" so the book stays in your library.
For authors: how to sell to these readers
Readers in Ghana mostly want three things: to pay with MoMo, to get the book straight away, and to read it on their phone.
- Sell a PDF (works everywhere) and an EPUB if you can (reads better on phones).
- Sell from your own store so readers can pay by MoMo and get the file by email immediately. On Paylead, you upload the book, set a price, and buyers get a download link with limits on how many times it can be used.
- Build readers on Wattpad or social media with free chapters, then link to the full book.
