How to write a business plan for an online store in Ghana

A business plan for an online store answers eight questions on one or two pages: what you sell, who buys it, why they'd buy from you, how they'll find you, how they'll pay and receive it, what it costs to start and run, how much you'll charge and earn, and what you'll do in the first three months. You don't need a 30-page document unless a bank or investor asks for one. A short plan you actually use is worth more.

Why bother with a plan?

  • It makes you check whether the numbers work before you spend money.
  • It keeps you focused when you feel like trying ten ideas at once.
  • Banks, grant programmes and partners may ask for it.

The one-page template

Copy this and fill it in.

1. What I sell

One or two sentences. "Natural hair care products (shea-based creams and oils) for women with natural hair in Ghana."

2. Who buys it

Describe your ideal customer: age, location, job, what they care about. "Women 20 to 40 in cities, who wear their natural hair and buy online through Instagram." See how to define your ideal customer.

3. Why they'd buy from me

Your difference: price, quality, speed, a niche, your story. "Made in Ghana with raw shea, cheaper than imported brands, delivered same day in Accra."

4. How they'll find me

Pick two or three channels you'll do well:

  • TikTok and Instagram videos
  • WhatsApp status and broadcast lists
  • Facebook and Instagram ads with a small budget
  • Affiliates and influencers

5. How they'll pay and get it

"Online store with MoMo and card checkout, pay on delivery for first-time buyers in Accra, riders for Accra, waybills for other regions."

With a Paylead store, checkout, receipts and orders are handled; you plan the delivery.

6. Start-up and running costs

Start-up costs GH₵
First stock
Packaging
Branding (logo, labels)
Business registration
Total
Monthly running costs GH₵
Ads
Data and phone
Delivery not charged to buyers
Paylead plan (Starter is free)
Total

See how to register a business in Ghana for registration fees.

7. Prices and profit

For each main product: cost per item, selling price, fees and profit per item. Then:

  • Break-even: how many sales a month cover your running costs?
  • Target: how many sales a month do you want by month 3?

On Paylead, online sales cost 4% + GH₵ 1 and cash-on-delivery sales 2% + GH₵ 1. See how to price physical products and how to calculate profit margin.

8. The first 90 days

Month Goals
Month 1 Store live, 10 products listed, first 20 sales, first 5 reviews
Month 2 Post daily, first small ads, 50 sales
Month 3 Repeat-buyer offer, two new products, 100 sales

Numbers to track every week

  • Visitors to your store
  • Orders and sales in cedis
  • Conversion rate (orders ÷ visitors). See conversion rate explained.
  • Average order value
  • Ad spend and cost per sale
  • Repeat buyers

See how to read your online store numbers.

Test before you spend big

Before buying lots of stock:

  1. Post the product and take pre-orders. See how to take pre-orders.
  2. Run a small ad and see if people click and buy.
  3. Sell to friends of friends and ask for honest feedback.

If nobody buys at your price, change the product, the price or the audience before you invest more.

Not to start, but writing a one-page plan helps you avoid expensive mistakes. You need a longer one if you're applying for a loan or grant.

How detailed should the financial part be?

For a small online store, a simple monthly table of costs, sales and profit is enough. Update it with real numbers every month.

How often should I update my plan?

Every three months, using your real numbers.
