The best ways to bill customers for your app or SaaS in Ghana (2026)

You've built an app, a tool or a SaaS. People use it. Now you want a paid plan: GH₵ 50 a month for Pro, GH₵ 150 for Teams.

In Ghana, billing is harder than the tutorials suggest. Stripe isn't available to Ghanaian businesses, most of your customers pay by mobile money, and MoMo can't be charged automatically like a saved card. This guide compares four ways to bill for your app from Ghana, and what each one leaves you to build.

Fees were checked on each company's own website on 12 October 2026. Check each pricing page before deciding, because fees change.

Two kinds of tools

  • Payment gateways (Paystack, Flutterwave, Hubtel) process payments. They're cheap per payment and very flexible, but you build the billing around them: plans, renewals, reminders, grace periods, access control and receipts.
  • A billing platform on top of payments (Paylead) gives you the hosted subscribe page, renewals, reminders and an access check, so you write one API call instead of a billing system. It costs more per payment, and saves you weeks of work.

Neither is always better. It depends on your volume and how much engineering time you have.

What billing for an app needs in Ghana

  1. MoMo and cards in one checkout.
  2. A plan for renewals. Cards can renew automatically. MoMo needs the customer to approve each payment, so you need reminders and a renewal link.
  3. A grace period, so a customer who pays a day late doesn't get locked out of their data.
  4. Access control: your app needs to know who's paid, through a webhook or an API call.
  5. Test mode, so you can build without real money.
  6. Plan changes, coupons and trials.
  7. Simple onboarding. Gateways usually ask for business registration documents before you can go live.

1. Paylead

Best for: developers who want to start charging this week without building a billing system.

  • Plans as products: Basic, Pro, Team, renewing weekly, monthly, every 3 months or yearly.
  • Hosted checkout: a subscribe link, a Subscribe button or a full pricing table on your site. Customers pay with MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash, AirtelTigo Money, Visa or Mastercard.
  • Renewals handled: customers get SMS and email reminders 3 days before, on the day, and 2 days after, with a renew page. A 3-day grace period keeps them active while they pay. You don't write dunning emails.
  • One access call: pass your user's ID as ref and call GET /api/v1/access?ref=USER_ID to know whether they've paid. Or listen for signed webhooks for each payment, renewal and cancellation.
  • Test mode: sk_test_ keys and simulated payments, so you can build the whole flow without spending money.
  • Trials and coupons: free trials up to 90 days, and coupons that apply once or on every renewal.
  • No gateway application: payments land in your Paylead wallet and you withdraw to MoMo or bank.

Fees: the API and subscriptions are on Pro (GH₵ 149 a month) and Business. Each payment costs 4% + GH₵ 1, processing included. Withdrawals cost GH₵ 5 and arrive the next working day.

Watch out for: renewals don't happen automatically, even for cards; every customer renews from a reminder. And per payment, Paylead costs more than going straight to a gateway. At high volume, it's worth doing the maths.

2. Paystack

Best for: teams with developers who want the lowest fee and automatic card renewals.

  • Fees: 1.95% for local payments in Ghana, covering cards, mobile money and bank transfer.
  • Strengths: excellent documentation, subscription plans that renew saved cards automatically, and a trusted checkout.
  • Watch out for: Paystack's help centre says recurring payments aren't currently possible on its mobile money channel. For MoMo customers, you build the reminders, renewal links, grace periods and access logic yourself. You'll also go through business verification before going live.

3. Flutterwave

Best for: apps with customers across Africa and abroad.

  • Fees in Ghana: 2% on mobile money, 2.6% on local cards, 4.8% on international cards. Payouts cost 1.5% to MoMo or GH₵ 10 to a bank.
  • Strengths: many countries and currencies from one account.
  • Watch out for: as with any gateway, MoMo renewals and access control are yours to build. Add the payout fee to your costs.

4. Hubtel

Best for: Ghanaian businesses that want a local provider with fast settlement.

  • Fees: Hubtel lists a 1.95% transaction fee, which you can absorb or pass to the customer. Confirm the exact rate for online checkout with Hubtel.
  • Strengths: MoMo, cards and wallets such as G-Money and Hubtel, with settlement every hour according to Hubtel.
  • Watch out for: subscriptions, reminders and access control are yours to build.

See Hubtel's service fees.

What about Stripe?

Stripe isn't available to businesses registered in Ghana. Some founders register a company abroad to use it, which adds cost and paperwork, and Stripe still won't take MoMo from your Ghanaian customers.

Example: 200 customers on a GH₵ 100 monthly plan

  • Paylead (Pro): GH₵ 149 + 200 × GH₵ 5 = GH₵ 1,149 a month, with checkout, reminders, grace periods and the access check done.
  • Paystack: 200 × about GH₵ 1.95 = about GH₵ 390 a month, plus the time to build and maintain MoMo renewals, reminders and access logic.

The gap is about GH₵ 760 a month. If building and maintaining billing would take your developer more than a few days, starting on Paylead and moving later is usually cheaper. If you already have the team and the volume, a gateway wins.

How to choose

  • You want to launch paid plans fast, with MoMo customers: Paylead.
  • Most customers pay by card and you have developers: Paystack subscriptions.
  • Customers across Africa and abroad: Flutterwave.
  • You want a Ghanaian provider with hourly settlement: Hubtel.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Stripe in Ghana?

Not for a business registered in Ghana. Ghanaian developers usually use Paystack, Flutterwave, Hubtel, or a platform like Paylead that handles billing for them.

Can I charge a monthly subscription by mobile money automatically?

Not like a card. MoMo needs the customer to approve each payment. The usual solution is reminders with a one-tap renewal link and a short grace period, which Paylead provides out of the box.

How does my app know who has paid?

On Paylead, call GET /api/v1/access?ref=USER_ID, or listen for webhooks. With a gateway, you store payment state from webhooks yourself.

Do I need a registered business?

Gateways usually require business documents before you can go live. On Paylead you create an account and add a payout account for withdrawals.

Can I test without real money?

Yes. Paylead has test keys (sk_test_) and simulated payments. See test mode.
