To get your small business found on Google in Ghana, set up a free Google Business Profile, give every product its own page that uses the words buyers actually search for ("ankara dresses for sale in Accra", not "Collection 3"), answer your customers' common questions in short articles, and get other sites to mention and link to you. SEO is slow: expect results in months, not days. But unlike ads, the visitors keep coming after you stop paying.
What SEO actually is
When someone searches "where to buy ring light in Kumasi", Google shows the pages it thinks answer best. SEO (search engine optimisation) is making your pages the best answer, and making it obvious to Google that they are.
Three things matter most:
- Relevance: your page talks about exactly what they searched for.
- Trust: other sites mention you, real reviews exist, your details are consistent.
- Experience: the page loads fast on a phone and is easy to use.
1. Set up your Google Business Profile (free)
If you have a shop, a workshop or serve a local area, this is the fastest win. Your business appears on Google Maps and in the "near me" box.
- Add your exact name, category, area, phone number, opening hours and photos.
- Add your online store link as your website.
- Ask happy customers for Google reviews and reply to every one.
2. Find the words your buyers use
Type your product into Google and look at:
- Autocomplete: "how to sell eb…" shows what people type.
- People also ask: real questions you can answer.
- Related searches at the bottom of the page.
Write them down. Those are your page titles and headings.
3. Make every product page search-friendly
- Title: what it is plus who or where. "Natural shea butter body cream, 250 g" beats "Glow Pot".
- Description: 150–300 words in plain language: what it does, who it's for, what's inside, delivery areas, and how to pay.
- Photos: clear, real photos. Name the files properly ("shea-butter-cream-250g.jpg").
- One product, one page. Don't put ten products in one image.
On Paylead, each product gets its own fast page, and stores and products come with search-ready titles and previews, so links look good on Google and in WhatsApp.
4. Write answers, not adverts
Short articles that answer buyers' questions bring visitors who are already close to buying:
- A skincare brand: "Is shea butter good for eczema?"
- A tutor: "How to prepare for BECE maths in 6 weeks."
- A tailor: "How to measure yourself for a kaba and slit."
Each article ends with a link to the product that solves the problem. One good article a week beats ten thin ones.
5. Get mentioned elsewhere
Google trusts sites that other sites link to:
- List your business in Ghanaian directories and on your social profiles, with the same name and phone everywhere.
- Offer a useful quote or guest article to a blog in your niche.
- Partner with influencers who post your link on their sites or YouTube descriptions.
6. Use your own domain when you can
A name like glowbyama.com is easier to remember and builds trust over time. See how to use your own domain for your online store.
What not to do
- Copy product descriptions from other sites or suppliers.
- Stuff the same keyword into every sentence.
- Buy "1,000 backlinks for GH₵ 100". Google ignores them, or worse.
- Expect results in a week.
Frequently asked questions
How long does SEO take to work?
Usually three to six months for a new site to rank for anything competitive. Google Business Profile results can come within weeks.
Is SEO free?
Mostly, yes: it costs your time. You can pay someone to do it, but the basics in this guide are enough to start.
Should I do SEO or ads?
Both, for different jobs. Ads bring sales this week; SEO builds a steady flow of free visitors over months. See how to run Facebook and Instagram ads in Ghana.
