To run Facebook and Instagram ads in Ghana on a small budget, set up the Meta pixel on your store first, then create a sales campaign in Ads Manager (not the Boost button), test two or three different ads with a small daily budget for four to seven days, and only put more money behind the ad that brings purchases, not just likes. Most small businesses lose money on ads because they can't see which ad sold, so tracking comes before spending.
Before you spend a cedi
1. Have something worth advertising
Ads make a good offer sell faster. They don't fix a weak one. Before running ads, make sure:
- Your product page or landing page loads fast on a phone and explains the offer in the first screen.
- Buyers can pay on the page by MoMo or card, without messaging you first.
- You've made at least a few sales from friends, WhatsApp or organic posts. That proves people want it.
2. Set up the Meta pixel (and Conversions API)
The pixel tells Meta who visited, who started checkout and who bought. Without it, Meta optimises for clicks, and clicks are cheap but don't pay your bills.
On Paylead: copy your pixel ID from Meta Events Manager and paste it in Store Settings → Integrations. Add a Conversions API token too, so purchases still count when a browser blocks tracking. Step by step: connect Meta and TikTok pixels.
3. Pay for ads with a card that works online
Meta charges in dollars. Use a debit card enabled for international online payments, or a virtual dollar card. Check with your bank first, because declined payments pause your ads.
Boost vs Ads Manager
The Boost button is quick, but it mostly buys likes and profile visits. Ads Manager lets you pick the goal "Sales", choose the purchase event from your pixel, and see cost per purchase. For selling, use Ads Manager.
A simple first campaign
- Campaign goal: Sales. Conversion event: Purchase.
- Budget: GH₵ 50–GH₵ 100 a day to start, set at campaign level.
- Audience: Ghana (or your cities), age range that fits, and let Meta's broad targeting work. Don't stack 15 interests.
- Placements: Advantage+ (automatic) is fine to start.
- Ads: make three different ones:
- A 15–30 second video of you talking about the problem.
- A video of the product in use, or a customer's result.
- A simple image with the offer and price.
- Link: straight to your product or sales page, not your WhatsApp.
Reading the results
After four to seven days, look at one number: cost per purchase.
| Ad | Spend | Purchases | Cost per purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Talking video | GH₵ 350 | 7 | GH₵ 50 |
| Product video | GH₵ 350 | 2 | GH₵ 175 |
| Image | GH₵ 300 | 0 | n/a |
If your product sells for GH₵ 200 and you keep about GH₵ 190 after fees, a GH₵ 50 cost per purchase is profitable. Turn off the losers and slowly raise the budget on the winner (by about 20% every few days, not double overnight).
Make every visitor worth more
Ads get cheaper per sale when each visitor is worth more:
- An order bump at checkout raises the average order.
- Cart reminders bring back people who left at the MoMo prompt.
- A free lead magnet lets you follow up with people who weren't ready to buy yet.
Common mistakes
- Running ads to a page that asks people to "DM to order".
- Judging an ad after one day.
- Changing the ad every day, which resets Meta's learning.
- Spending on ads before anyone has bought organically.
Frequently asked questions

Can I track TikTok ads too?
Yes. Paste your TikTok pixel in the same Integrations settings. See how to track sales from Facebook, Instagram and TikTok ads.
