How to write a call to action that gets clicked (60 CTA examples)

A call to action (CTA) is the line or button that tells people exactly what to do next: "Get the guide", "Book your slot", "Pay with MoMo". A good CTA says what happens when they tap, uses an action verb, reminds them of the benefit, removes a worry ("instant download", "pay on delivery"), and gives a reason to act now. Every page, post, ad, email and message should have one main CTA. Several competing CTAs ("DM us, call us, follow us, visit our page") get fewer people doing any of them.

The anatomy of a strong CTA

Part Example
Action verb Get, Book, Start, Join, Order, Claim
What they get …the bakery guide
Benefit or result …and price your cakes properly
Risk remover Instant download · Pay with MoMo · Cancel anytime
Urgency (if real) Early price ends Friday

You won't use every part every time. A button might be three words; the line above it carries the rest.

Button: Get the guide Under it: Instant download · GH₵ 80 · Pay with MoMo or card

Button text vs "Submit"

Generic buttons waste the last chance to persuade.

CTAs for each channel

Sales pages

One main CTA, repeated: near the top, after the offer, after the FAQs. Same wording each time so it's familiar. On Paylead product pages the buy button stays in view on phones as people scroll.

Social posts and captions

End with one action and where to do it: "Order here: link in bio" or "Comment GUIDE and I'll send it." Don't end with "DM for price".

Ads

Choose the platform's button that matches your goal (Shop now, Sign up, Book now) and repeat the action in your text: "Tap Shop now to get it today."

Emails

One link per email, as a button or a clear text link: "Get the course for GH₵ 250 →". If you must have two, make one clearly the main action.

WhatsApp

Short and personal: "Here's the link when you're ready: [link]." See WhatsApp messages that sell.

Make the CTA easier to say yes to

  • Remove a worry right next to the button: "Pay with MoMo", "Instant download", "Pay on delivery", "Cancel anytime", "Free delivery in Accra".
  • Show the price near the CTA. Surprises at the payment step lose buyers.
  • Reduce the steps. On Paylead the buyer pays on the same page, by MoMo prompt.
  • Add urgency only when it's real: a launch price that really ends, limited stock, a date.

First person vs second person

"Get my free guide" sometimes beats "Get your free guide" because the reader imagines saying it. It's worth testing, but clarity matters far more than the pronoun.

Mistakes

  • Several CTAs pulling in different directions.
  • Vague verbs: "Submit", "Click here", "Learn more" when you mean "Buy".
  • Fake urgency ("Only 2 left!" every day).
  • A CTA that promises one thing and leads to another.
  • Hiding the button at the bottom of a long page.

Frequently asked questions

Where should the CTA go on a sales page?

Near the top for people ready now, after the offer section, and at the end after FAQs. Keep the wording the same each time.

What colour should the button be?

A colour that stands out from the rest of the page. Contrast matters more than the specific colour.
