On Paylead you can make customers pay the transaction fee with one switch: Customer pays transaction charges. The 4% + GH₵ 1 fee for online payments is then added to the buyer's total at checkout, and you keep 100% of your price. Leave it off and the fee comes out of your sale instead.
How to turn it on
- Open Store Settings → Payments.
- Turn on Customer pays transaction charges.
- Save.
From then on, online payments in your store add the fee on top of the buyer's total, including your products and payment links. Open one of your products and go to checkout to see exactly what buyers will see.
What changes for you
| Fee off (you pay) | Fee on (buyer pays) | |
|---|---|---|
| Price of the item | GH₵ 200 | GH₵ 200 |
| Fee | GH₵ 9 comes out of your sale | Added to the buyer's total |
| What reaches your wallet | GH₵ 191 | GH₵ 200 |
Cash-on-delivery orders are different: the 2% + GH₵ 1 fee comes from your wallet because the buyer pays the rider in cash.
When to pass the fee on
- Low-margin items where 4% matters, like phones and electronics.
- Payment links for services, where clients are used to paying charges.
- Donations and dues, where people usually expect a small top-up.
When to keep paying it yourself
- Digital products and courses, where a round price ("GH₵ 100") reads better than an odd total.
- First-time buyers who are still deciding. Every extra cedi at checkout gives them a reason to stop.
A middle path many sellers use: keep the fee off, and raise your price a little to cover it.
