Affiliate marketing is the simplest way to earn online if you have people who listen to you but nothing of your own to sell. You share someone else's product, and when a buyer pays through your link, you earn a commission.
No stock, no delivery, no customer service. Just a link, your audience and your recommendation.
How affiliate marketing works
- A seller turns on affiliates for a product and sets the commission, for example 30% of every sale.
- You get your own link to that product. It remembers that the buyer came from you.
- You share the link on WhatsApp status, TikTok, Instagram, your YouTube description, a Telegram group or wherever your people are.
- A buyer pays. The sale is recorded against your link and your commission is calculated automatically.
- You get paid once the commission clears.
The seller only pays you when a sale happens, which is why sellers are happy to give generous commissions.
How much can you earn?
Commission is usually a percentage of the price, sometimes a flat amount.
| Product | Price | Commission | 20 sales a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| E-book | GH₵ 80 | 40% (GH₵ 32) | GH₵ 640 |
| Online course | GH₵ 400 | 30% (GH₵ 120) | GH₵ 2,400 |
| Skincare set | GH₵ 250 | 10% (GH₵ 25) | GH₵ 500 |
| Webinar seat | GH₵ 150 | 25% (GH₵ 37.50) | GH₵ 750 |
Digital products (courses, e-books, templates) usually pay the highest rates because the seller has no stock cost. Physical products pay less but sell more easily.
What to promote
The best product to promote is one your audience already wants and you would recommend to a friend. Good matches:
- A fitness page promoting a meal plan or workout program.
- A student influencer promoting exam prep guides or CV templates.
- A fashion account promoting a tailoring course or a clothing brand.
- A business page promoting a bookkeeping template or a marketing course.
- A food creator promoting a baking course or a spice brand.
Avoid anything that promises guaranteed returns: "double your money" investments, forex signal groups and pyramid schemes. One bad recommendation can cost you the trust it took years to build.
Where to find products to promote
- Affiliate marketplaces. On Paylead, the affiliate marketplace lists products from Ghanaian sellers who have turned on affiliates, with their commission shown. Pick one and get your link in a minute.
- Brands you already buy from. Message them: "I post about skincare to 8,000 people. Do you have an affiliate program?" Many small brands will set one up for you.
- Course creators and coaches. People selling knowledge products almost always want affiliates.
How to promote without sounding like an advert
People ignore "BUY NOW!!!" posts. They respond to stories and proof.
- Use it first. Show yourself using the product, or share what you learned from the course.
- Show results. Before-and-after photos, a screenshot of the template you made, a dish you cooked from the recipe book.
- Answer the real question. "Is it worth GH₵ 300?" Tell them honestly who it's for and who should skip it.
- Give a reason to buy now. A launch price, a limited bonus or a coupon code the seller gave you.
- Put the link where it's easy to tap: pinned on your profile, in your bio and in every status about the product.
A simple weekly rhythm works: one story post, one result post and one direct "link is in my bio" reminder.
How affiliates get paid on Paylead
- Every paid sale through your link records your commission straight away. Commissions also count on order bumps and upsells taken in the same order.
- The commission clears after 7 days, so refunds and cancellations can land first.
- Cleared commissions go into your Paylead wallet, ready to withdraw to your MoMo or bank account. Each withdrawal is a flat GH₵ 5.
If an order is cancelled or refunded before it clears, the commission is reversed.
For sellers: get affiliates working for you
If you sell something, affiliates are a free sales team. Turn on affiliates for a product, set a commission and share your recruit page. Start with 20% to 40% for digital products and less for physical ones. Our affiliate program guide shows each step.
Common mistakes
- Promoting everything. Ten products in one week looks like spam. Pick one or two you believe in.
- Hiding that it's a paid link. Be open: "I earn a small commission if you buy through my link." People respect it.
- Giving up after a week. Most affiliate sales come after people have seen you mention a product several times.
- Sending people to a home page. Always link to the exact product.
Frequently asked questions
Is affiliate marketing legal in Ghana?
Yes. Promoting products for a commission is a normal business. Be honest that you earn from your links and avoid promoting investment schemes.
Do I need money to start affiliate marketing?
No. You need a phone, an audience you can reach (even WhatsApp contacts count) and a product to promote. Joining an affiliate program should be free.
How do I get paid as an affiliate in Ghana?
Through the platform that tracks your sales. On Paylead, cleared commissions go into your wallet and you withdraw to mobile money or a bank account.
How many followers do I need?
Fewer than you think. A WhatsApp status seen by 300 people who trust you can sell more than an Instagram page of 10,000 strangers.
What is a good affiliate commission?
For digital products, 20% to 50% is common. For physical products, 5% to 15% is more typical because the seller has stock and delivery costs.
