Instagram Reels ads work for small businesses because they look like normal Reels: vertical, quick and made on a phone. Hook people in the first 3 seconds, show the product in use, add captions, and run the Reel in a Sales campaign optimised for purchases so Instagram shows it to people likely to buy, not just watch.
What makes a Reel ad work
- Vertical, full screen. Film in 9:16.
- A hook in the first 3 seconds. A question, a surprising result or the product in action.
- Captions on. Many people watch without sound.
- Real, not polished. Phone footage in good light often beats an expensive edit.
- One message. One product, one benefit, one call to action.
Five Reel ideas you can film today
- "Watch me use it." The product doing its job, from start to finish.
- "Three mistakes." Three quick mistakes people make, then the product as the fix.
- "What you get." Unbox it, or for digital products, scroll through what's inside.
- "Answering your DMs." Read a common question on screen and answer it in 15 seconds.
- "A day with…" Show where the product fits in a normal day.
Using a Reel you already posted
If an organic Reel did well, you can use it as an ad. Either select the existing post in Ads Manager, or upload the video again as a new ad. Organic success is a good sign, but judge it as an ad by cost per purchase.
Running it for sales
- In Ads Manager, create a Sales campaign.
- Conversion location Website, with your pixel and the Purchase event.
- Placements: Advantage+ placements is fine to start; Reels will be included.
- Add the Reel, a short caption, and your product link.
Connect your Meta pixel and Conversions API token in Paylead first (how), so Instagram knows which views became sales.
How long should it be?
Short is usually better for ads: 10 to 30 seconds. If you need longer to show a result, make sure the first 3 seconds give a reason to keep watching.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a professional editor?
No. Instagram's own editor or CapCut is enough for captions, cuts and music.
Can I use trending music in ads?
Not always: music that's fine in an organic Reel may not be licensed for ads. Use Meta's Sound Collection or royalty-free tracks.
