To promote an online course with Meta ads, don't send cold traffic straight to a high price. Warm people up first, with a free lesson, a webinar or a low-priced starter product, then sell the course to the people who engaged. Track every step with your Meta pixel so you know which ads lead to enrolments.
Why courses need a different plan
Someone seeing your ad for the first time doesn't know you yet. GH₵ 50 is an easy yes. GH₵ 1,000 is a decision. The more a course costs, the more trust you need to build before you ask for the sale.
Three ways to sell a course with ads
1. Straight to the course page (lower prices)
Works for short, practical courses at an impulse price. Use a strong promise, a preview video and a clear list of what's inside. Optimise for Purchase.
2. Free lesson or webinar first (mid to high prices)
Run ads to a free registration, then sell the course at the end of the lesson and in follow-up emails. Optimise the first ads for sign-ups: on Paylead, a free product registration is reported as a Purchase with a value of 0, and a sign-up through a Paylead form as a Lead. Then retarget the people who registered with ads for the course.
Paylead's webinar templates and email automations cover both steps.
3. Starter product first
Sell a GH₵ 50 workbook or mini-course with ads, then offer the full course to buyers with an upsell right after checkout. Ads that pay for themselves on the starter product make the course sales almost free.
What to put in the ads
- Results, not modules. "Edit product photos that look professional on any phone" beats "12 lessons on mobile photography".
- Show the inside. A screen recording of one lesson or a student's work (with permission) builds more trust than any graphic.
- Answer the doubt. "No laptop needed", "learn at your own pace" or "lifetime access", only if they're true.
Retargeting does the heavy lifting
Most course buyers don't buy on the first visit. Create a custom audience of people who viewed your course page or started checkout in the last 14 to 30 days, and show them:
- A testimonial or a student result
- An answer to the biggest objection (time, price, "is this for me?")
- A reminder before a price rise or enrolment deadline, only if it's real

Track it properly
Add your Meta pixel and Conversions API token in Paylead (how). Paylead sends page views, checkouts started and purchases, so you can see your cost per enrolment, not just clicks.
Let Paylead draft the ads
Open your course in Paylead and tap the green Promote megaphone to get headlines, ad text and creative ideas written for it. On Pro and Business you'll also get audiences, a budget and a retargeting plan.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I spend to sell a course?
Start with a small daily test budget for a week, then judge by cost per enrolment. A pricier course can afford a higher cost per sale.
Should I run ads before I have students?
Yes, but start with a free lesson or a launch price so early buyers take less of a risk, and collect reviews to use in later ads.
