To protect an ebook or online course from piracy, deliver it through secure links instead of sending the file on WhatsApp, limit how many times each link can be downloaded and when it expires, keep video lessons inside a course instead of sending video files, and give paying customers something a pirated copy can't: updates, support, a community or certificates. No method stops every share. The goal is to make sharing annoying and buying easy, so most people simply pay.
Why piracy happens (and why it matters less than you think)
People share PDFs in WhatsApp groups mostly because it's easy and the original was hard to buy. Many people who download a pirated copy would never have paid. Spend most of your energy making buying easy, and a little on making sharing harder.
Protecting ebooks and PDFs
Don't send the file yourself
When you send a PDF on WhatsApp, it's free to forward forever. Sell through a store that delivers a download link instead. On Paylead, buyers get the link on their receipt and by email the moment they pay, and can find it later in My purchases.
Limit downloads and set an expiry
On each digital product you can:
- set a download limit for each buyer,
- make links expire after a number of days or on a date,
- ask for a password before the file opens.
A link that stops working after three downloads is much less useful in a WhatsApp group.
Brand every page
Put your name, store link and a line like "Licensed to the buyer. Please don't share" in the footer of every page. If it does get shared, readers still find their way back to you.
Split what's valuable
Keep templates, spreadsheets or bonus files as separate downloads, or behind a short form. The PDF alone is worth less to a pirate than the full kit.
Protecting online courses
- Keep lessons inside a course, not as downloadable video files. On Paylead, each buyer gets a private course link after paying, and the course player saves their progress.
- Drip content or add live parts. Weekly Q&A, feedback on assignments and a group chat can't be pirated.
- Update the course. Paying students get new lessons; old pirated copies go stale.
Give buyers more than the file
The best protection is value that only paying customers get:
- Updates and new editions.
- A private community or paid group.
- Templates, checklists and worksheets.
- Answers to questions, feedback or a call.
- Certificates, if your audience values them.
Make buying easier than pirating
- Pay on the page with MoMo or card. No "send money to this number, then screenshot".
- Fair prices, or a cheaper short version for students.
- Pay what you want with a minimum for people who can't afford the full price.
- Instant delivery, any time of day.
If you find your product being shared
- Ask the group admin politely to remove it. Many will.
- Post in the same space that the official version (with updates and support) is available, with your link.
- If someone is reselling it, report the listing to the platform it's on.
Frequently asked questions
Can I stop people screenshotting my ebook?
No. Anything that can be read can be screenshotted. Focus on making the real thing better and easier to buy.
Should I add a password to my PDF?
A password stops casual forwarding but also annoys real buyers who forget it. Download limits and expiring links are usually a better balance.
Is sharing a paid ebook illegal in Ghana?
Copying and sharing someone's work without permission can infringe their copyright. If it's a serious case, speak to a lawyer.
